Alexis Marie Adams
Writer, mother, wanderer & wonderer
I live and write at the edge of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in Montana and in a remote village in southern Greece. My articles and essays have appeared in National Geographic, The Guardian, Scientific American, Orion Magazine, The Boston Globe, and many other publications. My work, as wide-ranging as my interests, has explored habitat restoration and the climate crisis in the American Southwest, the impact food and agriculture have on the environment, the culinary histories and traditions of the eastern Mediterranean, cultural and sustainable travel. Today, I am focused on doing my small part toward helping to protect Earth’s last wild places, through writing and activism.
Wherever in the world I am, I wonder, can’t efforts meant to restore or protect habitat and biodiversity also help create vital, sustainable economies? In the Mediterranean, I'm curious about the connections between traditional foodways, cultural vitality, and biodiversity. I’m keenly interested in exploring nature-based solutions to the climate crisis.
My article for National Geographic about transhumance, the seasonal migration of shepherds and their flocks, won the Silver award for Cultural Tourism from the Society of American Travel Writers. The New York Times featured my story on wild pollinators and habitat restoration for Scientific American in an end-of-year roundup of “solutions-oriented journalism."
I love to read, hike the ancient pathways of Greece, the hardwood forests of Northern Michigan, and the mountains of Montana, swim in the sea, backcountry ski, and participate in Greece’s wild and hypnotic panagyria. I forage, garden, and knit. I am Mom to two fun, funny, and fascinating young adult kids, to an English setter who landed in our lives just when we needed her, and to two very sweet Greek cats. And, I'm partner to David, book reader, player of the accordion, fellow wanderer and lover of adventure.
